The Richmond office was founded in 1926 and operated as Mays & Valentine, L.L.P. until the merger with Troutman Sanders on January 1, 2001. As a symbol of the firm's growth and its commitment to the Richmond community, the downtown Richmond office was relocated to the new Riverside on the James complex on July 5, 2005. The Troutman Sanders Building is the cornerstone of Riverside on the James, an innovative, mixed-use development with office space, retail space and luxury residential units. Located on Brown's Island, on the banks of the James River, the building offers spectacular views of the river, the Richmond skyline and the historic Haxall Canal — originally designed by George Washington. The project incorporates and maintains the original power plant structure which began supplying electricity to Richmond in the early 1900s. The office is located just blocks from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia and the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.
